Hiring Summer and Temporary Workers

What is a Casual or Temporary (Summer) Employee?

A casual employee is identified as an individual hired for specific, short-term assignments, including on-call work or for a limited duration, typically to fulfill short-term staffing needs. These employees usually work fewer than 1,040 hours annually. They are eligible for benefits mandated by law, and also receive PTO and sick time.

Position Request

Human Resources and the Finance Office review all open non-faculty positions and new position requests across the university. They make strategic staffing decisions in line with Colgate's operating budget.

Emergency Closing Policy

The University will make every effort to provide essential services to residential students and campers, even in cases of extreme adverse weather or other emergencies. Therefore, the University will almost always remain open. In the campus communication, the University will state the duration (begin and end times) of a closure, delayed opening, and early release. Employees are expected to review both text messages and emails to ensure they receive complete and up-to-date information regarding the University's status.
