Longyear Museum

This spring, the Longyear Museum of Anthropology is showcasing the student-curated exhibition Unraveled: Labor and Meaning Behind Weaving. Created by 10 students in the fall 2024 MUSE 300: Museum Curating class, the exhibition brings together an incredible range of textiles, baskets, and fiber art from around the world, showcasing the craftsmanship, beauty, and cultural significance of woven works.

Colgate University and the United Mexican States have taken yet another step to advance their collaborative, scholarly relationship.

On December 16, 2024, Colgate University repatriated the remains of 21 Oneida ancestors from the collections of the Longyear Museum of Anthropology to the Oneida Indian Nation at the Nation’s Mary C. Winder Community Center.

Oct. 17–31, the Department of History and Longyear Museum of Anthropology welcomed artists from Jalabil, a women’s weaving collective in Chiapas, Mexico, for a two-week residency.

Colgate University officially marked the first repatriation for Ancestral remains removed from what is now the state of Maryland through the federal Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA).

This restitution consists of 67 archaeological pieces that will be repatriated to Mexico in the near future, and is the result of the good will of both parties.

This spring, the Longyear Museum of Anthropology hosts “Imagining Indigeneity in a Global Future,” curated and designed by Justice Wysinger ’23. 

In a cooperative effort to bring Haudenosaunee culture to life for younger generations, the Oneida Indian Nation partnered with Colgate University’s Longyear Museum of Anthropology and the Picker Art Gallery to produce large outdoor reading stations, known as a Story Walk.

The Oneida Indian Nation and Colgate University today announced the imminent return of ancestral remains of at least six individuals. Bone fragments were found within the collection of the University's Longyear Museum of Anthropology, where they have been held after being recovered from archaeological sites decades ago.
