Katie Griffes joined the Colgate staff in 2018, and serves as the Director of the Shaw Wellness Institute. Her primary responsibilities include supervising Shaw Wellness programs and initiatives, as well as sponsored student organizations. She works to provide health education and promotion to students, staff, and faculty in the Colgate Community. Katie is originally from Eaton Rapids, Michigan. She graduated from Olivet College, where she was a member of the women's tennis team, with a BA in Psychology. She earned a PhD from Michigan State University in Kinesiology with a concentration in sport psychology, as well as cognates in sport coaching, human growth and motor development, and counseling psychology. Her research interests have focused on leadership development in sport and the military, using sport as a vehicle for life skill development, and sport participation in underserved communities. Prior to coming to Colgate, Katie was an Assistant Professor / Program Director for Exercise Sport Studies and Physical Education at Benedictine University, and Assistant Professor / Program Director of Health and Physical Education at Defiance College. She was heavily involved with community health initiatives, working on the Board of Directors for the YMCA and Special Olympics. Following her love of travel, Katie was an Associate Fellow with the McMaster School for Advancing Humanity, leading student research trips to Tanzania.

Laurie Baker graduated in 2002 from Utica College with a Bachelors in Child Psychology and a minor in Gerontology. She completed her National certification in November 2002 as a Certified Child Life Specialist which she maintains today. At that time, she began working in the field of social work where she worked in a variety of settings doing primarily case management and mental health support working in a variety of settings including homecare, education, developmental disabilities, addiction, palliative care and hospice, and eventually academia. Laurie graduated with a Masters in Social Work from SUNY Albany in 2011 and obtained her License in Master of Social Work in 2012. She completed her LCSW license in 2017. These experiences have all helped to provide a multitude of skills as a mental health counselor in a college environment.

Laurie currently specializes in a variety of clinical fields and treatment practices. Her areas of expertise include but are not limited to trauma, grief and bereavement, substance abuse and addiction, depression, anxiety, and adolescent individual and group therapy. Her clinical orientation includes Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical-Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Art and Expressive Therapy, and Psychoeducation. Her life motto is based on a simple Ghandi teaching "Live each day as if you are dying, learn each day as if you have forever".

View BioDeirdre Smith serves Colgate as a Dietitian. Her roles on campus include confidential, one-on-one nutritional counseling for students and staff, as well as speaking to campus groups, panels, and classes. She is a resource for those with any special dietary needs, and /or food sensitives and allergies, or if you are looking for guidance and tips on creating a healthy diet. She is available to meet for one or multiple sessions to discuss your nutritional concerns. Deirdre joined the Colgate community after working for a partial hospitalization treatment practice for eating disorders. It was during this experience that she developed a strong interest working in the field of eating disorder recovery and prevention. She is passionate about helping individuals heal their relationships with food and work towards creating a healthy balance around food, diet, and exercise. She is attracted to the principles of Intuitive Eating and Health At Every Size (HAES). She believes that there is no universal diet and that health goes far beyond your plate and exercise routine. She is here to provide information and support in making choices that are both nourishing and supportive of your lifestyle and nutritional needs. In addition to working with eating disorders and disordered eating, she has a variety of experience in the world of nutrition, including medical nutrition therapy, community outreach nutrition, food safety, and cooking demonstrations. Deirdre received her Bachelor of Science in Nutrition Management from Rochester Institute of Technology and became credited as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist in 2008. She has also received additional training as a Certified Yoga Instructor and as a Health Coach. It is her goal to positively influence others through diet and lifestyle changes so that they may improve their relationships with food, diet, and health.
