Internship Credit Program

The Internship Credit Program (ICP) opens internship opportunities to students by allowing access to internships in which students may earn academic credit.

About the Program

The Internship Credit Program (ICP) allows students to earn "supplemental credit" at Colgate for participating in internships that meet certain criteria. The credit is supplemental to the student's transcript; it may not be used to fulfill the requirements of a Colgate degree.

Many employers require that their internship programs qualify for academic credit on interns' transcripts for reasons related to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The ICP allows Colgate students to participate in such positions by granting supplemental credit on Colgate transcripts to those who successfully complete these internships.

Eligibility

Not all internships qualify for supplemental course credit at Colgate. To be eligible for the ICP, the student and internship internship opportunity must match the following:

  • The student must be a currently matriculated student who has completed at least one semester, but who has not yet graduated.
  • The internship must require interns to earn academic credit as a condition of hiring.
  • The internship sponsor must be able to engage you in at least 120 hours of work during the internship period.
  • The internship partner must be willing to evaluate your work and sign off that you completed at least 120 hours of work by the conclusion of the internship.

Frequent Questions

Students Seeking to Enroll in the Program

No, this program is only available for internships that require credit.

Please send the employer information document (available in the application packet) to your employer. If the internship sponsor has questions regarding Colgate's program, please have them contact Career Services at 315-228-7380.

Once you have been offered your internship, please complete the internship credit application below. This should be done at least five business days prior to the start of your internship. Completed applications should be submitted electronically to Career Services at internship@colgate.edu. Once your application is reviewed, Career Services will send documentation to your employer verifying your enrollment.

Upon enrollment, you will be forwarded a packet outlining all assignments and deadlines. You will be required to write a final report, conduct two informational interviews and write synopses of each, and ensure that your internship sponsor submits a written evaluation of your work.

You may withdraw from the ICP at any time prior to the first day of the internship. Once the internship has begun, very rare exceptions will be made to allow you to withdraw from the program without receiving a failing grade. Please vet internship opportunities thoroughly prior to accepting verbally or in writing. Internship sponsors invest a good deal of time and resources in identifying interns. Once you have committed to an internship, your internship sponsor's expectation is that you are interested, willing, and able to engage in the opportunity.

You may earn .05 credits for each approved internship completed. A maximum of four unique internship credits can be earned for a total amount of .20 credits. This credit will be documented on your Colgate University transcript.

Internships are graded on a pass/fail basis. A failing grade will factor into your GPA. Passing grades will not affect your GPA. You will be graded on the quality and timely submission of your work, as well as whether 120 hours of work was completed and verified by the internship sponsor.

No additional fees or tuition are required for you to earn this credit.

Students Already Enrolled in the Program

In most cases, internship credit will be recorded on your transcript for the term in which the internship was completed (spring, summer, or fall). For students on medical leave, academic dismissal, or disciplinary suspension with conditions for readmission, the internship will be recorded for the term after you are readmitted.
