The chemistry department features over 10,000 square feet of dynamic teaching and research laboratories. Students have the opportunity to use advanced, research-grade instrumentation in their instructional laboratories and when conducting research with faculty.

About Our Facilities

The home of the chemistry department at Colgate is Wynn Hall, which houses both teaching laboratories and laboratories dedicated to research by the department’s professors and students.

In addition to communal research laboratory space for chemistry and biochemistry, each member of the faculty has a laboratory dedicated to their personal research and scholarship.

Student Access to Facilities

All research facilities are available to undergraduate student researchers. Students may also access the department’s computer lab, which houses 12 workstations equipped with software packages specifically suited for scientific data analysis, molecular graphics, and computational chemistry.

Used for providing detailed structural information on organic, bioorganic, and organometallic chemical samples, it features a variable temperature unit, automated sample changer, and 1H/13C and broadband multinuclear probes.

Used for protein and small molecule crystallography, it features dual-wavelength X-ray generators, a Kappa-geometry goniometer, and a cryojet capable of maintaining temperatures as low as 110 Kelvin.
