Our students work with individuals facing significant debt from the loss of job, medical costs, or the actions of an abusive ex-spouse, assisting the low-income clients in the compilation of their initial Chapter 7 bankruptcy paperwork.
The Upstate Institute facilitates community-based research in the region, bringing community organizations into conversation with Colgate faculty and students to conduct research in a variety of areas that will inform and support the region.
The Gretchen Hoadley Burke ’81 Endowed Chair for Regional Studies is an annual appointment that supports outstanding teaching and research on the upstate New York region.
We encourage scholarship on, or directly pertaining to, the upstate region of New York by providing support for both the costs of research as well as stipend awards for the faculty researchers.
We advance the educational objectives of the university by encouraging engagement between students and the local region.

The LifeLong Learning Program is guided by a board of community members and Upstate Institute staff.
Events and courses are offered by the LifeLong Learning Program, an organization sponsored by Colgate's Upstate Institute.
Most of our classes occur at The Palace Theater in Hamilton, NY. All classes are open to non-members for a $10 fee.
