A grant from the National Science Foundation will bring a new field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) to Colgate University, complete with a suite of high-tech detectors that will allow for new research in geology, physics, biology, computer science, and other fields.

Professors Isla Globus-Harris and Rick Klotz were tenured and promoted to associate professor.

An international research team led by Colgate Professor Rebecca Metzler has determined the composition and structure of adhesive produced by oyster Etheria elliptica. The work could have implication in the conservation of oysters and also help understand ways to develop underwater adhesives.

Mariette Monpierre’s and Michel Reinette’s 2022 documentary, Les Derniers Blancs Matignon de Guadeloupe, and Estelle-Sarah Bulle’s 2018 novel, Là, où les chiens aboient par la queue, emblematize the complexities involved in reimagining postcolonial identities in Guadeloupe, especially that of the Blancs-Matignon.

Two academic freedom experts, Keith Whittington of Yale Law School and Ulrich Baer of New York University, made their cases for the role and scope of free speech in higher education during Colgate’s 2024 Constitution Day Debate: “‘Snowflakes,’ Truth, and the Future of Academic Freedom” Sept. 12. The annual debate celebrating Constitution Day was sponsored by the Forum on Constitutional Government and the Center for Freedom and Western Civilization. 

On April 22, 2024, the Center celebrated the 2024 recipients of the James Madison Summer Fellowship over a lively dinner at the Colgate Inn.

Assistant Professor Cosmin Ilie, Jillian Paulin ’23, and Katherine Freese at the University of Texas at Austin have been awarded the 2023 Cozzarelli Prize for their paper analyzing images from the James Webb Space Telescope that found three objects that might be “dark stars.”

Professor Levine shares his journey from his childhood interests in astronomy to his work in an upcoming 2027 lunar research mission through NASA’s recurring Payloads and Research Investigations on the Surface of the Moon (PRISM) program.
