Colgate Together Digest

Back to Colgate Together Digest

Hello, Colgate Community,

The Health Analytics Team has been keeping a close eye on the data as we have moved through a modified Gate 1 and Gate 3. Of the hundreds of tests we have conducted this week, we have seen one new student case and no new employee cases. Our single student case generated two close contacts. Our thoughts are with them all this afternoon.

Based on these numbers, the HAT has recommended a return to Gate 4, effective immediately. Please visit colgate.edu/gates for full Gate 4 guidelines.

It is always heartening to enter the weekend on a high note, especially when central New York has been doing its best to remind us why it's best not to pack away the base layers until June. Again, I want to thank you for doing the hard work that has been required to stop the cluster of COVID-19 cases from spreading even as you try to maintain your focus on preparations for the end of the semester.

Next week, we will continue with event planning and, hopefully, vaccination clinics. Watch for your opportunity to be vaccinated — whether it’s on campus or elsewhere — if you have yet to begin your process. Preliminary results from our voluntary survey indicate a strong intention to vaccinate among students, faculty members, and staff members. This is great news, because vaccination is the safest, most effective way to advance community health.

This is how we finish strong.

Have a great weekend.

Laura H. Jack
Vice President for Communications

The Max A. Shacknai COVE will collect donated items in the residence halls as students move out for the summer. Items collected are redistributed to local nonprofit organizations in need of supplies. We are seeking help to collect donations as well as with sorting and organizing — shifts are available beginning Monday, May 10, and ending Friday, May 14. Please sign up by April 30 to assist us with this important effort. All abilities are welcome. In 2019 we collected and redistributed more than $59,000 worth of items to 44 local agencies. This could not happen without the help of volunteers like you.

Don’t let the hammock fool you — there’s serious brainwork going on under those trees. If you wish you were hanging out and studying at the same time, drop by Basecamp to rent your own while supplies last.

Colgate University will provide free transportation to the Syracuse Airport, May 2–May 9
May 2–4: Noon and 3 p.m.
May 5–8: Noon, 4 p.m., and 8 p.m.

Pick-up location is outside of Donovan’s Pub along Lally Lane. First come, first served reservations may be made here. Student requests with less than 24-hour notice may not be accommodated due to de-densification requirements.

A Closing Thought

Good luck to Emma Schaeffer ’22, Vuong Hoang ’24, and Alex Chu ’22. Their films are up for awards in the 8th Centrally Isolated Film Festival, hosted by Cornell. You can watch their films online and cast a vote in the audience award category through April 30, when winners will be announced.

Upcoming Events

Hamlet the Sponger
April 23
View the filmed University Theater spring 2021 production of Hamlet the Sponger, based on a William Shakespeare tragedy. This production opens on April 23. By tradition, it is agreed that Shakespeare was born on April 23, Saint George’s Day.  This is the national day of England, and, coincidentally, also the date on which Shakespeare died 52 years later.

Earth (Satur)Day Action Party
April 24
2 p.m.
Join Students for Environmental Action (SEA) to listen to some music and spend time outside on the quad in celebration of Earth Day! Bring a blanket to sit on (if you want), wear a mask, and of course, social distance. The first 100 students receive free reusable utensil kits.
