Kaitlin Maratea ’25 and Amelia Rastley ’25 presented papers with Prof. Mahadevi Ramakrishnan at a roundtable discussion on the topic of, “Multiple Voices of the French Caribbean” in Trois Rivieres, Québec on July 25, 2023.

Maratea (with guidance from Prof. Hélène Julien) addressed Maryse Condé’s multi-faceted identity within the framework of oppression and alienation via her work Le Cœur à rire et à pleurer and Rastley’s presentation (with guidance from Prof. Aleksandr Sklyar) explored how Aimé Césaire rebelled against the notion of “civilization” through his text Discourse on Colonialism. Ramakrishnan explored the interpretations of the “authentic” and the “other” in postcolonial Guadeloupean society.
