Spring 2024 - Religious Holiday Policy

Back to Provost and Dean of the Faculty Announcements

Dear Colleagues,

This message is a reminder regarding Colgate’s policy on religious holiday observance.

Our policy, which can be found in the Faculty Handbook (section IV.C.5), states that Exams should not be scheduled, and papers should not be due, on any major religious holiday or on the subsequent day. In addition, every effort will be made not to schedule major college events on these days. For scheduling purposes involving the student body, Colgate recognizes as major religious holidays the following: Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, the first two days of Passover, Good Friday, Easter, and the first days of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.

Students observing additional holidays (e.g. Eid or Orthodox Easter) should inform their professors in advance to arrange personal accommodations consistent with the campus policy. Please note that faculty, staff, and students observing Ramadan will be fasting during the daylight hours from March 11 to April 9.

For your ease of reference, here is a link to Colgate’s Religious Holiday Calendar.

We appreciate your respect and support for our students’ diverse backgrounds, given Colgate’s commitment to nourishing our students both within and outside of the classroom.

Warmest Regards,

Douglas Johnson, Dean of Academic and Curricular Affairs
