Reminder: Opportunities for Student-Faculty Interaction

Back to Provost and Dean of the Faculty Announcements

Dear Faculty Colleagues,

The Office of the Dean of the College and the Office of the Provost and Dean of the Faculty encourage faculty and students to continue conversations outside of the classroom. Our two offices have set aside funding to support several opportunities for student-faculty interaction during the semester.

The Dean of the Faculty Refreshment Program

This program provides funding for faculty members who wish to share refreshments or a meal with their current classes outside the normal class meeting time. The allowance is $150 per class for the 2023–24 academic year. The Office of the Provost and Dean of the Faculty will also entertain requests for supplementary funds for classes with more than 25 students. This program provides funding for entire classes only and does not cover alcoholic beverages.

Faculty members should fill out the Dean’s Refreshment Form to access these funds and receipts must be submitted through Concur within 30 days of the event per university policy. If you have questions about the program, please contact Cassidy Rodman (crodman@colgate.edu).

As part of our efforts to build a more inclusive community and foster a sense of belonging among all students, the Office of the Provost and Dean of the Faculty will also make some funding available to faculty who would like to have a mentoring coffee or informal meal with a small cohort of students who may not be in a class together. If you would like PDOF support to bring such a group of students together, please send a brief description of the gathering you would like to host, including the number of students and a rationale for bringing them together, to Tammy Still (tstill@colgate.edu) for review.

The Office of the Dean of the College has also set aside funds to support faculty/staff and student interactions. The objective is to bring faculty members, administrators, and students together in residential dining settings outside the classroom or office. Below are places where you may take students for coffee, a snack, or a meal. Please note that there is a new process this year, described below, to allow for smoother entry to these venues.

Chobani at the Hieber Café & The Coop:

A faculty or staff member with a student will be able to charge up to $6.00 each for coffee and snacks at the Coop or at the Hieber Café. The faculty or staff member must accompany the student(s) through the line and sign for the charges at the register. This program may be utilized up to 5 times during the spring semester.

The Meal Program:

Faculty members and administrators who want to talk with students informally over breakfast, lunch, or dinner are encouraged to do so at Frank Dining Hall. If the student is on the board plan, please have them swipe their I.D. Otherwise, you may use one of your free meals for the student and one for yourself. This program is also limited to 5 meals during the spring semester.

If you are interested in taking part in this program, please stop by the Office of the Dean of the College, 103 McGregory Hall, to pick up printed vouchers from Michele Carney, assistant to the vice president and dean of the college. You may also call the office at 315-228-7425 and these vouchers can be mailed via campus mail. Vouchers can be used at the checkout at any of these locations with no additional paperwork to complete on the date of entry.

We wish you all the best for the start of a wonderful semester.

Lesleigh Cushing, Provost and Dean of the Faculty
Paul J. McLoughlin II, Vice President and Dean of the College
