Together, Colgate's Office of University Grants and Sponsored Research and the Office of Accounting and Control serve an audit function for faculty grants and sponsored research.

These offices monitor grant expenditures and the filing of required reports to the funding agency.

Reporting on the use of grant funds is an essential part of the funding process. Timely reports are important to the individual grant recipient and to Colgate's continuing relationship with the foundation or agency.

Proposals for funding that will be administered by the University (funds are paid to and disbursed by Colgate), must be reviewed and approved before being submitted to the funding agency.

Many grant proposals request compensation for one or more people involved in the project. In most cases, fringe benefits will be included. A multi-year proposal should include estimated yearly increases.

Rates are negotiated every four years with the federal government and are based on legitimate costs of utilities, facilities, and administration not charged on a pro rata basis in grants.

Purchases of equipment are guided by the Colgate University Purchasing Policies and Procedures. Contact the Purchasing Department (315-228-7838) for assistance with procuring price quotes, possible discounts, and the specific procurement requirements for federally funded projects.
