Colgate Together Digest

Back to Colgate Together Digest

Hello, Colgate Community,

It’s finals week, theses are due, research projects are wrapping up, and grading is underway. I appreciate you taking time to read this email, and I’ll be brief.

We have added no new positive cases of COVID-19 since my report on Friday. We will be conducting departure tests tomorrow (see below) and tests for unvaccinated commencement participants this Thursday. Seniors and volunteers, watch for check-in information coming to your inbox.

Please remember that campus remains in Gate 4, and we still need to wear masks, avoid gatherings, and maintain physical distance during move-out.

Students should watch for these symptoms developing within 24 hours of exposure to their last final: the urge to sleep for a month; the capacity to cry tears of joy and sorrow simultaneously; a feeling that you’re running late … for nothing. These might be signs that you are done with one of the hardest years in University history. Seek congratulations immediately.

Take care, and I’ll talk to you on Wednesday.

Laura H. Jack
Vice President for Communications

Take Note

Students, the last day to schedule a pre-departure antigen test is tomorrow. International students who are traveling abroad and need PCR testing should contact Student Health Services directly at 315-228-7750 or studenthealth@colgate.edu.

The ALANA Cultural Center is open every day, 8:30 a.m.–9 p.m., until Thursday, May 6, as a location for students to study. Students are welcome to study in the MPR, conference room, or the lounge. Students are encouraged to bring their own water bottle.

As a culmination of their work in the major, all senior studio art concentrators complete a research project, creating a body of work based on a concept that is explored in a selected studio media, including drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, video, and digital technology. The resulting work is exhibited in the Clifford Gallery and adjacent spaces in Little Hall, 11 a.m.–5 p.m.

Textbook buybacks are taking place at the bookstore through May 8, 10 a.m.–5 p.m., or at Donovan’s Pub, May 6 and 7, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. You may return your rented textbooks at any time to the bookstore. All rented textbooks must be in the bookstore by May 9 or you will be charged the non-returnable rental fee. Please contact textbooks@colgate.edu or call 315-228-7472 if you have any questions. If you are studying remotely, rented textbooks may be returned via U.S. mail and must be received no late than May 9: Colgate Bookstore, Rental Returns, 13 Oak Drive, Hamilton, NY 13346.

Students, please donate your unwanted items to local nonprofits as you move out. The COVE will be collecting items in tents on upper campus and in boxes in common areas of housing on lower campus. View dates and locations. In 2019, we collected and distributed items worth a total of more than $59,000 to 44 local agencies. This program is possible due to the generosity of Colgate students — thank you!

A Closing Thought

On April 25, the Colgate University Concert Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Prof. Glenn Cashman, was joined by Mark Shiner and Frank Grosso to perform works by Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, John Coltranne, and more. Visit the Livestream archive and listen while you study.
