Colgate Together Digest

Back to Colgate Together Digest

Hello, Colgate Community.

This is an important week for compliance and testing. With 47 students in quarantine due to being close contacts, we could quickly move beyond our capacity to safely handle student quarantine and isolation, so please do your part in helping to keep our community healthy.

Based on the direction of the dashboard metrics and the number of violations to the Commitment to Community Health this past weekend, the Task Force on Reopening has recommended we not move to Gate 2 this week. Gatherings will continue to be in groups of 10 or fewer with no permission to visit friends in other residence halls or hang out in bedrooms. We want our community to be social while keeping the number of close contacts to a minimum. Please revisit the guidelines for Gate 1 in this video

There is no joy or satisfaction in sending stern emails. I’d rather talk about ambitious cod and delicious dumplings. So many students, staff, and faculty have worked so hard for us to be together this semester. We want to be successful all the way through Thanksgiving but we need your help.

Thank you to everyone who continues to follow the guidelines for each Gate. We appreciate how difficult this has been. Make no mistake, you are making a difference.

We can do this.

Laura H. Jack
Vice President of Communications

Take Note

Don’t forget to submit a photograph of yourself on campus wearing a mask. All students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to participate. The images will be incorporated into an online presentation in a few weeks. Provide a high resolution image with vertical/portrait orientation, preferably with an aspect ratio of 3:4. Make sure your image is appropriate, and remember to remain at least 6 feet apart if you have more than one person in the photograph. Send your submissions to broadcast@colgate.edu.

Each semester, the Counseling Center offers a suicide prevention training. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for college students. As members of the Colgate community, it is important that we all learn how to respond to someone in distress and how to save the life of someone who is depressed or suicidal. This virtual training will be on Sept. 30 at 4:15 p.m.

On Tuesday, September 22, from 5 to 7 a.m., ITS will be performing maintenance on the campus backbone network. We are not expecting this maintenance to cause any impact to the network, but we would like everyone to be aware if something unplanned were to occur. If you have trouble accessing the network please contact itshelp@colgate.edu.

Reminder: The ColgateAlert mass notification system will be tested on September 22 at noon. Campus community members should log in to the Colgate University portal in advance of the test to make any necessary contact information updates and/or additions.

With 43 days until Election Day, be sure to check out the Colgate Vote Project. The Colgate Vote Project strives to create a population of habitual student voters on campus by streamlining the registration and voting process.

A Closing Thought

Did you know that this month marks 50 years of coeducation at Colgate? In September 1970, 214 women (132 of them “freshmen”; the rest transfer students) joined 452 men as the Class of 1974. As the Colgate Maroon noted, “Girls Shatter ‘Male Tradition’ as Campus Enters a New Era.” Read more
