My teaching interests run the spectrum from Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Parasitology to Emerging and re-emerging infectious disease.

Whilst researchers have focused a great deal on the gastrointestinal complication of H. pylori infection through studies conducted in clinical settings, we know very little about its effect on extra-gastroduodenal diseases. In particular, the potential negative impact on childhood growth and hemoglobin level (anemia), and the beneficial (protective) role on allergic disorders have been emerging as new hypotheses. My research interest seek to test the following hypotheses; (1) H. pylori infection might negatively affect childhood growth and hemoglobin level (2) H pylori infection might have a protective role in allergic diseases. In addition, the effect of soil-transmitted helminthes (STHs) parasites and deworming interventions on atopy and other selected health-related outcomes among school children will be explored. Students are involved in fieldwork and data collection in rural Ethiopia.

BIO 310 Epidemiology
This course provides an introduction to epidemiology, the basic science of public health. Epidemiology provides a systematic approach for acquiring and evaluating information on the distribution and causes of disease and other health outcomes in populations. Topics include the history of epidemiology, an overview of epidemiologic methods (e.g., study design, measures of disease distribution and association, interpretation), and the application of epidemiologic research to the development and evaluation of disease prevention and control strategies. Current or historically relevant infectious and chronic diseases are explored through lecture, interactive exercises, and independent assignments. Prerequisites: BIOL 181 or BIOL 182 (formerly BIOL 211or BIOL 212), or permission of instructor. 

BIO 301/301L Parasitology
This course introduces students to the range of eukaryotic organisms that cause parasitic diseases in humans. The focus is on globally important helminths, protozoans, and arthropods. The latter will be covered as both agents and vectors of human parasitic diseases. Topics covered include the biology, geographical distribution, sources of infections, life cycles, route(s) of transmission, clinical disease, and control/preventive measures. The basic principles of laboratory diagnosis and treatment of parasitic diseases are included in the course to enhance the practical parasitology knowledge of the students. The course includes reading of the primary literature, and requires oral and written critical analysis of the literature. The credit-bearing laboratory BIOL 301L must be taken concurrently with BIOL 301. Prerequisite: completion of BIOL 181 and BIOL 182 (formerly BIOL 211 and 212) or permission of instructor. 

BIO 474 Global Health Epidemiology
This research tutorial provides students the opportunity to plan, conduct, and present original research in the area of global health and infectious disease epidemiology. Projects involve investigations in the field, laboratory, and/or data analysis. Potential topics for projects include mapping neglected tropical disease (specifically soil transmitted helminths parasite), and their impact on maternal and child health. In addition the role of H. pylori infection in extra-gastroduodenal diseases in general, in child growth development, anemia and allergic disorders in particular will be investigated in this research tutorial laboratory. Weekly meetings allow students to discuss their projects and relevant papers from primary literature. Students are expected to keep a research notebook and formally present research findings to the department. Students also complete a report of research activities in scientific format, with the goal of publication in a scientific journal, and a proposal in the format required by the National Science Foundation. Prerequisite: permission of instructor.
