Colgate welcomed Gabriel Bol Deng, a “Lost Boy of Sudan,” to campus on Thursday. Gabriel fled Sudan when his village was attacked; years later he came to Syracuse, N.Y., as a refugee, and now he speaks about his experiences. He came to Colgate to speak about his organization Hope for Ariang.

Red spotlights hit the stage of the Palace Theater, illuminating Dao Anh Khanh’s silhouette behind an opaque sheet, on April 6. As the performance artist began to move, each of Khanh’s calculated motions was synchronized with alternating colored lights, powerful noise, musical harmonies, video, and smoke. The overall effect was like moving art.

At a forum with students in Love Auditorium, Colgate President Jeffrey Herbst, who studies the politics of Sub-Saharan Africa, lamented the lack of more complex dialog to result from the worldwide attention.
