Providing an opportunity for student-athletes to appeal decisions made on behalf of the University by the Department of Athletics regarding grant-in-aid eligibility.
Timeline
A student-athlete who wishes to appeal a decision related to cancellation, reduction, or non-renewal of his/her athletic scholarship shall submit a written notice to the Senior Associate Dean and Director of Financial Aid within 15 business days of the student’s receipt of notification of the decision. The hearing shall be initiated no earlier than 5 business days following the receipt of the student's request and no later than 15 business days from the date. The student and Athletics Department will be notified in writing of the date, time, and location of the hearing. At minimum, notice shall be provided to the student requesting the appeal, as well as the Director of Athletics, Athletics Scholarship Coordinator, and Head Coach. Such a hearing may take place exclusively through written correspondence and/or conference call if the Committee deems appropriate.
The written notice must include:
- The student’s name, Colgate ID #, and sport
- A detailed statement of the reason(s) the student believes the decision to cancel, reduce, or not renew his/her athletic scholarship is unjustified.
- Copies of all documents the student wishes to be considered as part of his/her appeal
Hearing Procedures
The student and a representative from the Athletics Department (e.g. Athletics Scholarship Coordinator, Head Coach, etc.) will each have an opportunity to address the committee separately. The student may be accompanied by a parent/guardian and/or an advisor and may confer with the same, but only the student may address the Committee. The order of presentations to the committee will be as follows:
- Student
- Representative from the Athletics Department
- Requests for additional information made by the committee to either party as deemed necessary
- Committee deliberates and arrives at a decision.
The purpose of the hearing is one of fact-finding. There will be no cross-examination process. The student and a representative from the Athletics Department will only be present before the committee on separate occasions, and may only address information that was submitted prior to the hearing.
Decision Process
The committee will determine whether the reduction or cancellation was consistent with NCAA, and Colgate University institutional policies and procedures. The Committee shall have the authority to reverse or modify the decision to cancel, reduce, or not renew the student’s athletic scholarship. The Committee shall communicate its decision in writing to all parties within a reasonable period of time following the hearing. The Committee’s decision is final and shall not be subject to review by any other institutional body.
