Gaeilge, the Irish language, has been far from a working language for centuries — however, it is intricately tied to Irish history and culture. Sophie Naylor ’24 traveled to Belfast, Dublin, and Galway to study the role Gaeilge played in the development of the Irish national identity post-British occupation.

Through interviewing Deaf individuals in America and Berlin, this study attempts to compare Deaf perspectives in order to advise society on how to best promote inclusivity of Deaf individuals in the future.

In our study, made possible with financial support from the Colgate AMS program, we set out to test the hypothesis that the physical environment has an effect on the development of philosophical beliefs.

During my final winter break at Colgate, I decided to use the rest of my AMS funds to continue a research project I had worked on in the summer of 2021: attempting to quantify how light pollution and “skyglow” from nearby population centers impact the nesting success rates of sea turtles.

Since I was a kid, I loved to travel and see different parts of the world.

For my first AMS project, I decided to focus on continuing my education and training in the volunteer fire service.

I used my AMS grant funds to take part in a short abroad program in Reykjavik, Iceland, sponsored by The GREEN Program.

To investigate how public activity is impacted by limited daylight, we took photos in multiple public spaces around Reykjavik at different times of day and made a photobook to document our findings.

Mackenzie has been involved with Haven, Colgate’s sexual violence resource center, since their first year and has largely shaped her academic path around this work, focusing their Women’s Studies senior project on responses to sexual violence on campus. Using the AMS grant allowed Mackenzie to gain new perspectives by attending a week-long training called Strategies for Trauma Awareness and Resilience at the Center for Justice and Peacebuilding at Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, VA.
