Colgate professor Peter Balakianhas been named the 2012 recipient of the Alice and Clifford Spendlove Prize in Social Justice, Diplomacy and Tolerance.

Pulitzer Prize-winning author Richard Russo will speak at Colgate at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in Love Auditorium, Olin Hall. For those who can’t attend the free session, his talk will be webcast live, allowing online viewers to pose questions and interact with other viewers.

Author Colson Whitehead, who visited campus Thursday as part of the Living Writers course, shared thoughtful insights and lots of laughs with audience members who filled Persson Auditorium and with about 60 others who watched him through a live webcast.

A new component of the university’s signature Living Writers course has created amazing opportunities for alumni and parents to connect with Colgate and with each other.

The 16th annual Colgate Writers’ Conference, featuring a week of intensive workshops in the writing of fiction, non-fiction prose, and poetry, will take place June 19-25. A number of well-known writers will serve as faculty for the event, which draws both published and aspiring writers to discuss their writing, work on pieces, and attend readings.
