How to Transition From College

Transitions are challenging, even if you are well prepared. If you feel stuck, slow down and take smaller steps. Any step forward is movement. With that being said, here are some tips to help ease the transition to life after college:

Financial Success Takes Time: While some people are able to make good money right out of college, many don’t. Don’t make financial decisions based on what your peers are doing. Prioritize saving money, calculate what you need to live on and factor in savings. Put some money aside each month after you get paid. Implement a budget so you have some money to live on and some for a rainy day.

Be Intentional About Maintaining Relationships: Making friends may not be as easy as it was in college. Without the help of residence halls and student organizations you can’t wait for people to make friends with you. You will have to be intentional about creating and managing relationships. It can be a lonely period but you will need community to navigate this next chapter of your life. Schedule times to talk with friends who might be far away while staying open and curious to forge new relationships in this next chapter. When it comes to new friends, find people in a similar stage of life with the same hobbies as you. Reach out to your coworkers, join a gym or a book club, put yourself in situations that might seem intimidating, and say yes to as many things as you can.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help: Living with your parents or with roommates after college might not seem like the most attractive option. But, it can be a good idea both financially and socially. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice from your friends and other recent graduates. It might also be a good idea to get help from a mental health professional. You don’t have to face the transition alone.

Accept that Plans will Change: Life after college is a time for you to learn and grow. This is time for you to figure out what you want to do with your life, and not what others have mapped out for you. Break large goals into smaller ones and don’t be afraid to change directions and you figure out what you want.

Look to the Future: Think about what you want your life to look like beyond your first job or next chapter in your academic career. Do you want to get married? Have kids? Move to a new city? This first opportunity is just the first step in your professional career. Think of it as a learning experience and chance to build skills that will help you to accomplish your goals.
