Today is the last day of this semester’s classes, but I feel like that fact has not yet sunk in. Students have been occupied with completing their final class assignments and time seems to have slipped away. Next week marks the beginning of final exams as well as our last few days on campus.

Energetic children dashed around Huntington Gymnasium, eager to explore an inflatable obstacle course, join potato-sack races, and play basketball last Friday afternoon during the annual Sidekicks carnival. The musical stylings of the Swinging ’Gates and Pep Band welcomed local children, Colgate students, and the public to the afternoon of fun.

Colgate welcomed Gabriel Bol Deng, a “Lost Boy of Sudan,” to campus on Thursday. Gabriel fled Sudan when his village was attacked; years later he came to Syracuse, N.Y., as a refugee, and now he speaks about his experiences. He came to Colgate to speak about his organization Hope for Ariang.

Red spotlights hit the stage of the Palace Theater, illuminating Dao Anh Khanh’s silhouette behind an opaque sheet, on April 6. As the performance artist began to move, each of Khanh’s calculated motions was synchronized with alternating colored lights, powerful noise, musical harmonies, video, and smoke. The overall effect was like moving art.

Earlier this week, my Biology 211 Lab group took a trip to two local stream outlets to collect samples of aquatic microinvertebrates. Between course registration, room selection, and the great speakers that came to campus this week, Colgate students have most certainly been kept busy.

This week I attended a variety of lectures and learned that Colgate never fails to bring great speakers and presentations to campus. On Tuesday, as part of my Challenges of Modernity class, I attended a film screening of Jean-Luc Godard’s Histoire(s) du cinema.
