Homecoming events fill this weekend’s calendar, while the week ahead features lots of different events to choose from, including a lecture on the Islamic State, an indie film, and even some late night sushi.
On Monday, September 22, the International Relations Council will host Daniel Benjamin, the former coordinator for counterterrorism at the U.S. State Department and ambassador-at-large. He served as the main adviser to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in that role, and now works as the director of the John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding.
Benjamin will discuss “The Islamic State: Imminent Danger or Over-Hyped Threat?” at 4:30 p.m. in Love Auditorium, followed by a dinner with Harvey Picker Professor of International Relations Fred Chernoff and students.
The indie film Boyhood will be showing at the Hamilton Movie Theater next week. Richard Linklater’s film, starring Patricia Arquette, Ethan Hawke, Lorelei Linklater, and Ellar Coltrane, who plays the boy Mason, was filmed over the course of 12 years with the same cast.
The unique way the film was made captures a realistic, raw take on growing up from Mason’s perspective. The New York Times calls the realism, “jolting, and so brilliantly realized and understated that it would be easy to overlook.” The film will be showing at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
If you’ve been craving sushi lately, head over to ALANA Cultural Center for Late Night Sushi and Karaoke at 8 p.m. Thursday, September 25. The Office of International Student Services invites students to come by with their friends for karaoke, and to learn how to roll their own sushi rolls. The rule is one sushi roll per person while supplies last, so make sure to get there early!

Tonight from 7 to 9 p.m., head to Whitnall Field for the Homecoming Pep Rally and delicious BBQ catered by Holy Smoke BBQ. The Homecoming tailgate starts at 10 a.m. Saturday at Van Doren Field, so alumni and students can catch up before the field hockey and football games.
The field hockey team will start the day off against Holy Cross on Tyler Field at 11 a.m., in their first Patriot League game of the season. Then football will take on the Cornell Big Red at 1 p.m. at Andy Kerr Stadium.
