Join the Colgate community for Living Writers on ColgateX

Twenty-five years ago, professor Frederick Busch designed Living Writers as a way to bring students together with famous writers.

Today, professors Jane Pinchin and Jennifer Brice continue to teach Living Writers, which they revamped in 2009 for a new generation of undergraduates, and a new generation of online book lovers.

Using Colgate’s edX platform, Pinchin and Brice designed an engaging and interactive experience for the Colgate community to come together to read books and engage with authors and experts on the art of writing and reading great novels. So far, almost 400 people have signed up for the course, which includes videos, discussion boards, and livestream conversations about each book.

Beginning September 19, Pinchin, Brice, and e-students from the Colgate community will discuss works by Nadifa Mohamed, Jonathan Franzen, Marjane Satrapi, and Martin Amis. Live webcast conversations, featuring the author or special guests from the Colgate community, will take place prior to the authors’ public appearances on campus.

Living Writers on ColgateX will kick off with a reception at the Roger Smith Hotel in New York City Wednesday, August 27. All are welcome – even if you’re not taking the course. Register at colgate.edu/LivingWritersNYC.

In March of 2014, Colgate University and Hamilton College announced a partnership as new contributing members in the nonprofit online learning platform edX.

Founded by Harvard University and MIT, edX offers more than 150 courses in many areas of study, including the arts and humanities, public health, law, math, and computer science. Its focus is to open up access to the world’s best education globally, improve on-campus education, and conduct research to enhance teaching and learning.
