Named funds, restricted to a specific purpose, allow alumni, parents, and friends to honor or memorialize themselves, loved ones, or other special individuals in a particularly meaningful way.

For more information, contact Thirza Morreale at 315-228-6776 or tmorreale@colgate.edu.

Did you know that your company's matching gift program can double, and in some cases triple or quadruple, the value of your gifts to Colgate? Thousands of corporations in the United States and Canada may also match gifts from employee spouses and retirees.

Along with your contributions, matching gifts enable Colgate to continue its tradition of excellence and provide students with even greater opportunities. Please help make a difference for our students by:

  • Contacting your company's Human Resources Department for instructions.
  • Completing and signing your matching gift form.
  • Sending the form, along with your annual fund gift, to Colgate University, Gift Records, 13 Oak Drive, Hamilton, NY, 13346.

Matching gifts count toward membership in the Presidents' Club and other leadership giving societies. When you submit your matching gift paperwork with your gift, we'll include both your gift and your company's intended match in your cumulative giving total for the year.

For more information, contact gift records at 800-668-4428, or click the button below to find out if your company has a matching gift policy.

The Colgate Fund is the institution’s most important giving priority. It comprises unrestricted gifts, which provide the University with the financial flexibility to address its greatest needs and opportunities each year.

Contributions to the Colgate Fund touch every aspect of the student experience. Gifts of all sizes — from $13 to $13,000 — make a difference.

Nationwide, unrestricted giving has declined significantly over the past few years. At the same time, Colgate University supporters set a new record for their contributions to the Colgate Fund. Thanks to Colgate’s savvy, generous, and dedicated alumni network, Colgate’s unrestricted giving totals have risen 30 percent, while participation has increased from 40 to 46 percent. Colgate continues to ascend, thanks to these visionary supporters.

Endowment funds, which exist in perpetuity and are managed by the Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees, provide support for many of the University’s most vital, transformational initiatives.

Unrestricted endowment contributions provide Colgate with long-term financial flexibility. Named funds, restricted to a specific purpose, allow alumni, parents, and friends to honor or memorialize themselves or loved ones in a particularly meaningful way.

There are several types of restricted endowment funds, including:

  • Chairs: Allow Colgate to recruit and retain the brightest faculty for our classrooms and the best coaches for our athletic teams. Endowed chairs can be established with an average minimum investment of $2 million.
  • Scholarships: Make a Colgate education accessible for almost half of our undergraduate population each year. Restricted scholarships can be established with minimum contributions of $100,000; unrestricted scholarships with a minimum gift of $50,000.
  • Institutes of Advanced Study: Enhance Colgate’s reputation by supporting faculty scholarship and promoting student-professor research initiatives that cross disciplinary boundaries. Named institutes require a minimum contribution of $5 million.
  • Student Research Funds: Enable students to collaborate with faculty members on meaningful summer research projects. Student research funds can be established with a minimum gift of $100,000.
  • Internship Funds: Allow students from all financial backgrounds to pursue unpaid or underpaid summer internships that are important for career exploration and experience. Internship funds can be established with a minimum gift of $100,000.

Planned gifts, or legacy gifts, are a great way to support Colgate students and make a lasting impact on the University. A popular way to commemorate reunion or life milestones, planned gifts include any estate provision by will or living trust, IRA beneficiary designation, or certain gift arrangements that pay income in return.

Any future gift of this type qualifies the donor for membership in the Willow Society, Colgate’s legacy gift society. If you have already included the University in your estate plans, but have not yet told Colgate, we encourage you to get in touch. This provides Colgate with the opportunity to thank you and to ensure proper stewardship of your eventual gift.

Even if you wish to share nothing more than the fact that you’ve included a provision for Colgate, that information would be helpful and would allow us to welcome you to the Willow Society. You only need to let us know — all information is kept confidential.

To learn more, contact the planned giving team by phone at 800-813-1819, via email at plannedgiving@colgate.edu, or visit us on the web.
