In addition to therapy, outreach, and other counseling services offered on campus, Colgate University provides a list of off-campus resources for students.

If you are interested in off-campus counseling or psychological services please visit the referrals list with contact information for providers that are able to work with Colgate students while within New York State.

If you would like to search for a mental health provider in your hometown or another location, use the following steps to help you walk through the process:

  1. Visit Psychology Today
  2. In the "Find a Therapist" section, enter the name of your city or zip code. There are few in-person services in the town of Hamilton. However, many students find telehealth services beneficial, you may want to consider looking for a counselor who provides telehealth for the state of New York while at Colgate.
  3. To access mental health providers covered by the Colgate student health insurance, select "more" under the insurance tab and select "Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP)."
  4. If you would like to narrow down your options to a provider that specializes in a specific disorder or concern, select "issues". You will find you can further narrow down your provider based on identifying demographics and treatment modalities.
  5. Select a provider that meets your needs and would be a good fit.

Finding providers who participate with your insurance

Check with your insurance about in-network providers and the services that are available. Some insurance companies require pre-authorization before therapy sessions are covered and there is often a co-pay required. At this time, most cover telehealth appointments but it is still important to check with your insurance provider, either by calling the number on the back of your insurance card or accessing the insurance company website.

If you use the Colgate Student Health Insurance Plan, then you are covered by Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). Students who reside outside of the US are automatically enrolled in SHIP. Learn more about the Colgate Student Health Insurance Plan

Psychiatric Services

The counseling center partners with a telepsychiatry provider, Mantra. Students in need of medication as a supplement to treatment received at the counseling center can be referred to a telepsychiatry evaluation and continue to work with the psychiatric provider if they choose to follow their recommendations.
