Managing Your Network Accounts

Every member of the Colgate community is given a network account. Network accounts will grant you access to resources like the e-mail, Moodle, the portal and more. 

Setting up your account for the first time 

To set up your account for the first time, visit, and look for the text "I am a new user and need to set up my account"  Click on the appropriate link to set up your account for the first time.

Managing Your Account with our Password Reset Utility

Changing Your Password, Forgotten Passwords, or Expired Passwords 

Your network account is only good for one year and must be changed using our account utility. Your Gmail account password never expires, but should be changed on a regular basis for security reasons.
The password reset utility can be used to change both portal and e-mail passwords. This utility can also be used to reset passwords if you forget your password.

To change your password: enter username and current portal password and click 'continue to change my password.' Select 'change your password.' Enter your new password.

To reset your password, click Forgot your password? Or is your account locked? Follow the prompts to reset your password. In order to reset your password, you will need to input:
  • Your Colgate username
  • Your Colgate 9-digit ID number
  • Your date of birth
Colgate enforces a strong password policy. In order to reset or change your password, your new password must:
  • Contain both upper and lowercase characters (i.e., A-Z, a-z)
  • Have at least one digit (i.e., 0-9)
  • Have at least one punctuation character (e.g., ^*_+~={}[]<>?)
  • Be at least eight alphanumeric characters long
  • Not be a word in any language, slang, dialect, jargon, etc.
Note: Each Colgate account has a password for the portal and another password for e-mail. These passwords can be set to be the same, but they are technically different. They are not related and are not interchangeable. The portal password is used to access all Colgate online services. The e-mail password is used only for your e-mail account.

The Colgate portal provides access to important campus life, academic, and financial services. On the portal, you will receive announcements, vote in campus elections, register for classes, view grades and unofficial transcripts, view class schedules, pay fees, and more.  You can also share select records online with trusted individuals like parents or guardians using InfoShare within the portal.

Setting Up a VPN Connection

A VPN connection enables access to online services that require connection to the campus network. Such services include subscriptions to online journals and access to network storage.

To set up a VPN connection to Colgate University, see below for how to set up a VPN connection for your operating system and use the following settings for these parameters:
  • username/account name – your Colgate username
  • password – your Colgate portal password
  • internet address/server address –
  • name/service name – Colgate University
  • domain (if applicable) – COLGATE
  • Send all traffic through the VPN server
