Playing at the Division I level creates a lively, competitive atmosphere that also infuses the club and intramural sports scene enjoyed by hundreds of other students. As just two examples, the rugby and Ultimate Frisbee club teams recently played in national finals and competed internationally.
The Trudy Fitness Center, a state-of-the-art facility, is open to students, faculty and staff. It’s adjacent to the Lineberry Natatorium with its Olympic-size 25-meter swimming pool. Other
recreational facilities include a field house and gymnasium,
climbing wall, tennis, racquetball, squash and handball courts, batting cages, a skating rink, and sports medicine center.
Outdoors, the campus offers a 10K cross-country trail system, the
Seven Oaks Golf Course, a trap range, softball complex, boat house, and nature center for swimming and picnics. The
Outdoor Education program provides equipment and sponsors regular trips ranging from skiing in Vermont to canoeing in the Everglades.
Mark Murphy ’77,
the 2012 commencement speaker, is just one of many Colgate scholar-athletes who parlayed academics and sports into an exciting career. After playing varsity football at Colgate, he won a Super Bowl playing for the Washington Redskins of the National Football League, while also earning a law degree and an MBA. Murphy served as athletics director at Colgate, NFL executive and key negotiator during the player-union negotiations, and is now president of the Green Bay Packers.
