Hello, Colgate Community.
This morning, as students started to return to campus, Colgate announced historic news: applications more than doubled this year, from just over 8,000 to more than 17,000.
Your commitment to community health and successful completion of in-person instruction last semester were among many reasons for this remarkable result. I want to acknowledge you here today and thank you again for taking care of each other. The world noticed.
In order to replicate the success of the fall, we have returned to Gate 0, a.k.a. universal quarantine. This time around, Gate 0 will last at least 10 days, with the potential to move to Gate 1 following analysis of results from the second round of testing, which takes place during the week of 2/1. Details can be found online.
To keep the muscles — or your entire person — from freezing up in the Hamilton winter, recreation time has been redefined. Again, you can read more on the website. (While you’re out collecting meals, packages, and fresh air, you might catch a glimpse of faculty and staff members taking waste water samples for testing. Those efforts will continue throughout the semester.)
Again, keep an eye on the website for new information as we move forward. Thank you for being ambassadors for community health and for this University. Welcome back. We’ve missed you, and we look forward to another semester as Colgate Together.
Laura H. Jack
Vice President for Communications
Take Note
Universal quarantine might be the only time you will ever have the chance to say: “You punch really well. Want to go on a treasure hunt after we get done popping all of this bubblewrap?” Don’t miss the opportunity. Check out the growing list of Gate 0 activities on the Colgate Together calendar.
ITS offers installation of Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, Zoom Pro, and more (including the latest addition: Overleaf). For a complete list of packages, visit colgate.edu/software. During winter break, Colgate’s network administrators installed new high-speed network switches in all residence halls, boosting uplink speeds to the campus network core tenfold. All townhouse apartments have enhanced wireless coverage; four to five new wireless access points (AP) were added to the existing APs. The University also purchased additional wireless APs to address low wireless coverage areas reported by students to the Colgate helpline.
Every time you pick up meals, please remember to bring your lanyard, reusable bag, and container. Your lanyard and bag are waiting on the doorknob of your residence hall room and are color-coded based on your assigned dining venue and time. To ensure that we have enough reusable clamshell containers for future meals, please return them every time you visit the dining hall and we will wash them. Your support will reduce the amount of trash we produce during universal quarantine.
Staff and faculty members, take part in the timely webinar How to Support Students During the Pandemic, Wednesday, Jan. 27, at 12:15 p.m. Dean of the College staff members are excited to share what they learned last semester about supporting students’ mental and emotional health, both on campus and remotely. All Colgate faculty and staff members who interact with students are welcome, and a recording will be available for those who can't make it.
This year’s annual Go Red Lunch and Learn will be hosted by Community Memorial Hospital in a virtual format on Feb. 5 at 11:30 a.m. Join for an afternoon of health, wellness, and a survivor story. RSVP by Jan. 31, and a Zoom link will be emailed to you. All registrants will automatically be entered into a giveaway.
A Closing Thought
“From both my family and our school community, we would like to thank the entire Colgate faculty, staff, and student body for their commitment to community health this semester. In every interaction that I had within the Hamilton community, from the grocery story to the golf course, it was evident that this commitment was done due to the selfless nature of all. Well done!”
