Classes and Outings

Whether you’re into rock climbing, whitewater kayaking, shredding fresh powder in perfect telemark stance, or looking to learn all of the above, we’re here for you. Get up, and get outside!

Outdoor Education - Physical Education Classes

Course Descriptions

Course fees cover travel, food, instruction, all equipment and lodging where applicable. All courses are subsidized by the OE budget.

Financial Aid for PE Classes

A limited amount of financial aid is available to offset the cost of Outdoor Education PE classes. If you receive financial aid from Colgate, and would like to be considered for financial aid for a PE class, please contact Outdoor Ed.

Backyard Adventures

Backyard Adventures are short, local outings that encourage students to spend more time in the outdoors. BYAs provide free low(er) commitment options to get outside, develop outdoor skills, and meet people. These outings will help you try a new skill while adventuring in and exploring the local area.

Although not a full PE credit, many of these outings will earn you hours towards Wellness Passport credit credit. See descriptions for more information.

Some outings require advanced reservation – you can sign up below.

Tuesdays

Pool paddling
Who: Students only

Instruction Provided: 
Yes. OE staff will be in the pool to help you learn how to paddle, wet exit, roll, etc.

Where: Meet at Basecamp - Paddle at the Lineberry Natatorium (Colgate Pool)

When: Tuesdays 1/30-2/27 7:45-10:00pm

Equipment: All equipment is provided.

Passport Hours: 2 hours/session

Limit: 9 people. If you sign up after #9, you'll be added to the waitlist.

Wednesdays

Toggenburg Ski Van
Who: Students only

Instruction Provided: No. An OE staff will be present and can give you a couple of tips/pointers on how to improve your telemark turns, but full lessons are not available.

No alpine/downhill ski or snowboard instruction is available from OE. If you are looking for ski or snowboard lesson, contact Toggenburg.

Where: Meet at Basecamp - Ski at Toggenburg Mountain

When: Wednesdays 1/31-2/28 4:30-10:00pm

Equipment: The cost of the lift ticket is included, & telemark ski equipment can be borrowed from OE free of charge.

Alpine ski and snowboard equipment is not available from Outdoor Education. Toggenburg has alpine ski and snowboard equipment available to rent, but you will need to cover the cost.

Passport Hours: None

Limit: 11 people. If you sign up after #11, you'll be added to the waitlist.

Thursdays

Climbing Skills Sessions
Who: Students only

Instruction Provided: Yes. OE staff will be at the wall to help you learn about climbing movement, belaying, anchor building, etc.

Where: Meet at Angert Family Climbing Wall on the 3rd floor of the Huntington Gymnasium

When: Alternate Thursdays 2/8, 2/22 5:30-7:00pm

Equipment: All equipment is included.  

Passport Hours: 1.5 hours

Limit: Depending on what's being taught, our limit is 8 people, but if you show up, we'll do our best to accommodate you.

No reservation needed, just show up!


Syracuse Rock Gym Van
Who: Students only

Instruction Provided: No. OE staff are not permitted to provide instruction at the Central Rock Gym.

Where: Meet at Basecamp - Climb at Central Rock in Syracuse

When: Alternate Thursdays 2/1, 2/15, 3/1 4:30-10:00pm

Equipment: Gym passes are included. All equipment can be borrowed from Outdoor Ed free of charge.

Passport Hours: None

Limit: 11 people. If you sign up after #11, we'll add you to the waitlist.

Fridays

Free Winter Rentals
Who: Students, Faculty, Staff, and their immediate families. (Note: we do not have children's skis and have only a very limited supply of children's snowshoes.)

Instruction Provided: No. OE staff will help you get outfitted and teach you how to put on, and take off, your skis or snowshoes, but skiing and snowshoeing lessons are not available. Sign up for a PE class or a Sunday ski outing if you want to learn to ski or snowshoe.

Where: Outdoor Equipment Rental Center (OERC) in basement of Basecamp

When: Fridays 2/2-3/2 3:00-5:30pm

Equipment: Free cross country and snowshoe rentals between the hours of 3:00-5:30pm on Fridays. Items not returned by 5:30 will incur a rental fee.  

Passport Hours: None

Limit: Until we run out of skis/snowshoes.

No reservation needed, just show up!

Saturdays

Local Ice Climbing
Who: Students only

Instruction Provided: Yes. OE staff will lead this trip and will cover safety essentials, climbing movement, belaying, etc. Learning to belay and getting checked off at the Angert Family Climbing Wall before this outing is strongly encouraged (you can do this at one of our Thursday Skills Sessions).

Where: Meet at Basecamp – Climbing location TBD

When: Saturdays 2/24 & 3/3 8:00am-6:00pm

Equipment: All equipment is included.  

Passport Hours: 5 hours

Limit: 9 people. If you sign up after #9, we'll add you to the waiting list.

Local Ice Climbing Sign Up

Sundays

Local Cross Country Ski Outing
Who: Students only

Instruction Provided: Yes. OE staff will lead this trip and will teach you how to kick and glide your way to Nordic skiing glory.

Where: Meet at Basecamp – Cross country skiing at BREIA Ski Trails

When: Sundays 2/11 & 2/25 9:00am-5:00pm

Equipment: All equipment is included.  

Passport Hours: 5 hours

Limit: 10 people. If you sign up after #10, we'll add you to the waiting list.
