About East Asian Languages and Literatures

The department offers majors and minors in both Chinese and Japanese.

When learning Chinese or Japanese, you will also learn a great deal about the people and the culture the language represents.

If you continue through the four-year sequences of classroom language training and study-abroad experiences, you will acquire the proficiency you need to pursue graduate study or a variety of careers related to East Asia.

We also teach cultural courses in English, including courses on literature and film, the Japanese Village, the Chinese City, and Chinese Popular Culture. Qualified students may arrange independent study beyond the courses offered.
