Bewkes Center is a lakefront property available for recreational use by Colgate faculty and staff and their families. Hours are weather-dependent, and lifeguards must be present for use of the property. Colgate faculty/staff IDs are required.

Directions to the facility: Search "Bewkes Center: Colgate University, Geer Rd, Eaton, NY 13334" on Google Maps

The cottage by the pond provides restrooms, changing areas, and drinking water. The Bewkes Center is rich in wildlife and plants and we ask that you respect their habitat at all times.

When the swimming facility is open, lifeguards will be onsite and the “Beach Open” sign will be clearly posted. The size of the swimming area limits our permit to 38 swimmers at a time. If this number is exceeded or if 6-foot distancing is not possible, the lifeguards will be required to ask some people to leave the water. Absolutely no swimming is permitted when the lifeguards are not on duty or the “Beach Closed” sign is posted.

Please note: When the gate is locked, the beach is closed and no admittance is permitted. Violators will be prosecuted for trespassing.

      • Picnics: Picnic tables will not be available for the 2020 season. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs. A distance of 10 feet must be maintained on the beach between blankets/chairs of anyone not within the same household/family unit.
      • Large picnics, beach parties, and other gatherings are not allowed. Visitors will be asked to leave if there are too many people at the beach to allow for the required physical distance.
      • Boating: No motorboats are permitted on Bewkes property. Boaters may use their own canoes, kayaks, or rowboats only; personal flotation devices must be worn at all times.
      • Fishing: Catch-and-release fishing is permitted from the shore of the lake (away from the swimming area) when the beach is open. No fishing when the beach is closed.
