Linguistics Program

Study language, the foundation of the human experience, to develop an in-depth understanding of societies and individuals.

Where did language come from? How does it develop? How will it continue to evolve? The Colgate Linguistics Program explores answers to these questions through study in a broad array of academic disciplines.

Students draw on varied methods to develop skills in language acquisition and analysis, classical philology, philosophy, psychology and neuroscience, acoustics, and computer science.

The program offers a minor in linguistics.

During senior year, linguistics minors have an option to give a presentation demonstrating how their study of linguistics has informed their understanding of the world and influenced their academic pursuits.

Verbal instruction alone is not the most effective teaching method. The use of words along with hand gestures is a powerful combination for picking up a new tongue.
