Hello, Colgate Community. 

Happy St. Patrick’s Day. They had Hamilton in mind when they wrapped this holiday in green. It provides some hope for the day when our hills and valleys return to their more vibrant colors. I could use some chlorophyll in my life right now — not going to lie.

Speaking of anticipation. President Casey sent a video message to members of the Class of 2020 today, outlining the University’s plan to celebrate their commencement in 2022. Take a look.

The prospect of normalcy and visitors next spring should help us weather the upcoming weeks. As good as our numbers have been, we need to finish strong. The University conducted more than 1,200 tests of various types since Monday, and we are now starting to see results. So far, there have been no positive students and one positive employee. I will have an update on Gate movement on Monday.

To testing, masking, and distancing, we add the welcome tactic of vaccination in the fight against COVID. (Still working on a gerund for that one.) If you are eligible, visit the SUNY Morrisville vaccination clinic webpage and make an appointment for this week. You can also check the Am I Eligible site for state points of distribution, though Morrisville is not listed there. The University is coordinating transportation to Morrisville for those with appointments but without cars — see details below. Vaccination is not mandatory at this time, but it is strongly encouraged. 

In closing, a quick reminder: wear Colgate gear on Friday to support our men’s basketball team as they play Arkansas in the first round of the NCAA championship.

Senior Honor Society Class of 2022 Inductees
In 1934, two secret societies, the Skull and Scroll and the Gorgon’s Head, resolved to end their rivalry and joined together forming the Konosioni Senior Honor Society. In light of information suggesting this name is disrespectful to Indigenous communities, and that there are more suitable ways to reflect the group’s commitment to service towards marginalized groups, the Class of 2021 elected to temporarily drop the word Konosioni from the organization’s name. However, the mission of the honor society remains unchanged as we strive to:

• Serve as responsible and respected leaders of Colgate, whether on campus or off;
• Inspire a connection to Colgate’s campus and the surrounding community by seeking to provide an interface between the community and students;
• Promote the charitable and philanthropic efforts of area organizations as peer-selected stewards of the greater Colgate community.
   

Today, the Colgate Senior Honor Society stands as a peer-selected group of 26 students, representing 13 members from each original society. These individuals have been recognized for their outstanding leadership, dedication to service, and preservation of tradition.

All Colgate students, faculty, and staff are welcome and encouraged to attend the induction ceremony for the Senior Honor Society Class of 2022. The ceremony will be held virtually this year on Monday, March 22, at 7 p.m. 

 

There are still vaccine appointments available at SUNY Morrisville on March 18 and 19. Colgate is sponsoring free transportation to Morrisville. Shuttles will depart from in front of James C. Colgate Hall (Donovan’s Pub) at 9:40 a.m.; the last shuttle will depart at 5:20 p.m.

Students and faculty are reminded to clean the surfaces they used during class, including wiping down desks before and after the session. Disinfection remains an important infection control practice.

This week’s CUdos winners are: Haley Taylor ’21 because she always makes sure meetings go well and people are able to feel comfortable and heard in the space (which is not an easy task over Zoom); and Teddy Vought ’22 for individually reaching out to friends to check in on them and ask if there is anything he can do to help them right now. Teddy cares for those around him and wants to help however he can. All Colgate community members (faculty, staff, and students) are encouraged to submit a CUdos nomination. All students, on campus or remote, are eligible. Take a minute to recognize a student or classmate who warrants praise.
