Yesterday, Student Health Services staff and their colleagues from across campus conducted more than 1,000 COVID-19 tests for returning students. They were back in the tents today, wrapping up our first round of screening.
Our testing contractor continues to process results rapidly, so keep an eye out for yours if you don’t have them already.
As a reminder, social interactions in Gate 0 are restricted to family units. Direct family units may interact without face coverings (pending mutual agreement) and extended family units may interact in common spaces on residence hall floors while wearing face coverings and maintaining at least 6 feet between individuals.
Many professors and staff members delivering meals and monitoring outdoor time have commented on the general use of masks and the unusual — but quite necessary — lack of traffic in residence hallways. Thank you for your vigilance. That individual choice to follow science and guidance makes all the difference.

Take Note
According to the CDC, “masks with one-way valves or vents allow air to be exhaled through a hole in the material, which can result in expelled respiratory droplets that can reach others ... This type of mask does not prevent the person wearing the mask from transmitting COVID-19 to others.” Please continue to wear CDC-compliant face coverings, such as the Colgate masks issued during your arrival on campus.
The Student Involvement Fair is going virtual via FlipGrid on Aug. 30. Ask questions and learn about organizations directly from current members and leaders. Create your FlipGrid and Get Involved accounts using your Colgate.edu credentials now, and watch for more information in the days ahead. (Student leaders who have not yet received their instructions should contact clsi@colgate.edu.)
After quarantine, religious services will take place in Memorial Chapel. Reserve Judd Chapel for personal or small group prayers only through Alisha Duclos. Students of any or no affiliation can always schedule a confidential appointment with the chaplains directly. Or, if you’re having difficulty acclimating to campus, watch for information on joining one of their support groups. And take heart — the Heretics Club lunch series and other programming will continue via Zoom.

Colgate students, as you think ahead to life after quarantine, why not consider giving back to the community? Southern Madison County Volunteer Ambulance Corps partners with Colgate to provide EMS coverage for Hamilton and the surrounding area. As a volunteer, you can drive ambulances, lead 911 calls, and gain valuable clinical experience in an exciting environment. If you are an EMT or interested in becoming one, please apply before this Sunday.
