Institutional Support and Organization

The departments of Campus Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, and Emergency Management were consolidated under a single, elevated position reporting directly to the Dean of the College. This organizational restructuring facilitates greater coordination among the university's three primary incident response units.

Risk Assessment

A thorough review is conducted after any campus incident to provide insight into emergency management program gaps and areas for improvement.

Over the summer of 2017, in-depth risk hazard vulnerability assessments were performed for over forty different potential threats and hazards that could result in emergency events at Colgate University. Comprehensive reviews were conducted by both internal and external experts to assess Colgate University’s emergency management plans and make programmatic recommendations.

Over the summer of 2017, Colgate's emergency management team and the University Cabinet participated in an intensive four-day emergency management training program by external experts. The training included 'tabletop' exercises that allow for emergency management plan testing and discussion about decision-making processes.

In addition, Colgate University staff responsible for sending emergency notifications via Colgate Alert completed advanced user training courses administered by the system service provider (Rave Mobile Safety).

Education, Outreach, and Coordination

A campuswide education and outreach campaign was launched to inform students, faculty, and staff about the safety and security programs at Colgate, including emergency management. In addition, this outreach campaign provides additional opportunities for members of our community to provide feedback on ways to improve the programs.

Externally, our emergency management staff have recently worked to identify additional ways to coordinate incident management between the university and external emergency response agencies such as the Hamilton Police Department, Hamilton Fire Department, Community Memorial Hospital, and the Madison County Office of Emergency Management.
