Details on the first and last day of your trip are below. In between, each trip has its own itinerary, but the example below will give you a sense of what to expect.

WA Arrival Day

8:30 a.m.–12:00 p.m.
Arrival, Welcome, & Check-in at The Hall of Presidents in James C. Colgate Student Union

Welcome to Colgate! You should arrive at the HOP anytime during this window to:

  • Complete your immunization and vaccination screening with Student Health Services
  • Pick up your room keys from Residence Life
  • Pick up your Gate Card from Campus Safety
  • Confirm your account status with Student Accounts
  • Confirm you’ve completed required pre-arrival education components (, Sexual Assault Prevention for Undergraduates, etc.) with the Dean of the College Office
  • Check in to WA so we know you have arrived

Due to the limited space in the Hall of Presidents and the large number of students checking in, we request that parents wait for their student outside the HOP during the check in process.

The Mail Room is also open* this day to pick up any items you may have mailed to campus.

*Note: If you are mailing boxes to campus, do not mail anything you will need for your WA trip - mail can be lost or delayed, which could negatively impact your trip.

12:00-2:00 p.m.
Lunch on this day is on your own - no meal is provided by Colgate/WA, and meal plans are not active until the start of the semester. The first meal provided by WA is dinner on Arrival Day.  Students and families are welcome to continue moving into their residence halls after 12, but key pickup will close at noon. If you arrive after noon, you should check in with our Campus Safety Office, 88 Hamilton St, Hamilton, NY.  Now is when you say goodbye to your family and get ready for your adventure as your families prepare to attend the Family Orientation!

2:00–2:30 p.m.
Check in for WA is open at Basecamp. You can walk down or temporary parking is available in the lot behind the Trudy Fitness Center for students who are being dropped off.

If you are a student driving a car to campus, you will need to register your car with Campus Safety before you arrive, pick up your parking permit from the Campus Safety Office upon arrival, and you will be able to park your car in the first-year lot during WA

2:00–3:00 p.m.
Family Orientation
Families are invited to attend a family orientation session in the Colgate Chapel

2:30–6:00 p.m.
WA gets underway! Begin getting to know everyone. Review all the gear you brought with you and get any gear that you rented.

6:00–9:30 p.m.
Head to the Beattie Reserve for dinner. Pitch your tent for the first time, and try to get some sleep; your trip starts bright and early the next morning.

Early Arrival

Due to the need for a coordinated arrival day in order to ensure proper arrival day policies and protocols are followed, early arrivals for WA are generally not possible. If your travel plans have you coming into town prior to the morning of Arrival Day, you will need to make your own plans for accommodations. You can find a list of nearby Hotels & Accommodations here. You can also find more details about how to travel to campus here.

In limited circumstances early arrivals for WA may be approved through the Arrival Day and Time Survey emailed to all students by Dean Spencer. Wilderness Adventure cannot approve early arrival requests, all must be approved through the Arrival Day and Time Survey. In cases of early arrival, food will not be provided by Colgate or Wilderness Adventure until the beginning of programming on the evening of August 17th.

During the trip

Wake up early, help prepare breakfast and learn to use your camp stove. Get ready for the day - this might mean packing up your camp in preparation for a day of backpacking, canoeing, or kayaking; or it might mean packing a day pack in order to go out for a day of hiking, biking, climbing, or paddling.

In the woods, on the water, or at the crag, you'll have lots to talk about and learn about as you travel through the Adirondacks. You'll have plenty of snacks during the day, but you'll also stop to enjoy lunch and probably an amazing view!

Arrive at your spot for the night, set up your tents, and maybe start thinking about what's for dinner. You might play some games, learn about Colgate or the Adirondacks, or just hang out and get to know people better. Help prepare and enjoy a tasty dinner. Eventually, the sun will set and you'll get ready for bed.

Final Day (August 21st)

7:00 a.m.
Wake up in your tent, pack up your campsite one last time, and hike, paddle, etc. back to your van. Drive back to Colgate.
1:00 p.m.–6:00 p.m.
All trips will return to campus during this window. Each trip will have a designated time slot to return to Basecamp to clean and return all equipment used/borrowed for the trip. Once this process is complete, students will be able to return to their rooms to shower, etc.
7:00 p.m.
Celebration Dinner - Burke Hall and Pinchin Hall Quad
8:30 p.m.-10:00 p.m.
Group campfires, after dinner activities, and the formal end of Wilderness Adventure. At the end of the evening's activities, students will be able to sleep in their residence hall room.

New Student Orientation (August 22nd)

There are no WA activities this day. Students should consult the Orientation schedule for information on when and where New Student Orientation will commence.
