Cleaning and Sanitizing Electronics

A guide for safely cleaning and sanitizing University electronics.

Cleaning and Disinfecting Products

The only cleaning product/item that should be used on electronics is a wipe containing between 70% and 92% isopropanol. These will be supplied through Central Receiving along with other cleaning products.

Cleaning Process

When following these guidelines, there is no need to unplug the devices.

  1. Gently wipe across surfaces so that they appear visibly damp. However, liquid should not pool on any surfaces.
  2. If the surface has visible dirt, that should be wiped off with one wipe, then a second should be used to disinfect.
  3. Allow the surface to air dry

Do not spray any cleaner directly on electronics.

These guidelines apply to:

  • Monitor screens
  • Keyboards
  • Mice
  • Touch and Button Panels
  • Doc Camera buttons
  • Faceplates of rack-mounted electronics
