ITS Services and Support: Getting Connected

Back to Updates & Messages: COVID-19

Welcome Back

As you prepare for your return to campus in the coming days, we wanted to share with you some information that will help you transition back to campus. Please review the topics in this email, and continually check our website colgate.edu/its for updates. If at any time you have questions or concerns, please reach out to us. Our contact information is at the bottom of this email.

Getting Connected

Wireless

Network Improvements and Expanded Outdoor Wireless

ITS has worked throughout the summer on several network upgrades to make the network faster and more reliable. We’ve added several new areas of outdoor wireless for you to enjoy while working or relaxing on our beautiful campus. For a list and map of outdoor wireless, visit colgate.edu/getconnected. If you’re bringing a new laptop, phone or tablet to campus for the first time, you’ll want to connect to eduroam. As a reminder, your username should be your full email address, and your password is your network password when connecting to EDUROAM. Also we have a tool that will let you preconfigure your devices prior to arriving on campus.  You can visit cat.eduroam.org and download and run the installer prior to your arrival on campus.

Registering Your Gaming or Media Devices Before You Arrive on Campus

If your game system or other media streaming device was registered and working when you left campus, that device will still be registered and ready to connect to the Gaming and Media network.  If you are bringing any new gaming or media streaming devices to campus, we encourage you to pre-register your devices before you arrive.  To pre-register your devices, visit colgate.edu/getconnected.

Wired access in Residence Halls

Wired Port Activation

Our expansive wireless network should provide you with the speed and reliability that you need. Should you have a device that requires a wired connection, you should contact ITS prior to your arrival to request a wired port be activated in your residence hall. The request form can be found at colgate.edu/getconnected under the section “Wired Network.”

Cable TV

Wired Cable TV

If you are bringing a TV to campus, you can plug in a coax cable to the cable wall port, scan for channels, and enjoy. If you don’t have a coaxial cable, you can contact ITS for a free 6 foot coax cable.  Connection guide and channel lineup can be found at colgate.edu/cabletv.

Smart TVs

If you have a new smart TV, we encourage you to register it on our network before arriving on campus. If it was registered in the past, it will be ready to connect to the Gaming and Media network. To register, visit colgate.edu/getconnected.

Software, Printing, and Labs

Software

For a list of software available to you for use, visit colgate.edu/software.

Printing

ITS has been developing plans for safe printing options including plans for touchless printing at our print release stations. As our plans are developed, check for updates at webprint.colgate.edu.

Labs

Not only will our computer labs re-open in the Coop and in Case Geyer, we also will continue to provide service to our virtual labs using Appstream.  For lab information, visit colgate.edu/labstats. To access a virtual lab, visit colgate.edu/appstream.

Being Prepared for Online Learning

Since all classes will be remote during the two week quarantine, it’s important that you be prepared.

Zoom

Zoom has released a few updates since classes ended in May.  Check your Zoom app to make sure it’s up to date before classes begin. We have a student Zoom guide on our website.

Webcams and Headphones

You might want to consider webcams and headphones for a better experience during remote instruction. More information is available on our student technology guide page.
