Current Max A. Shacknai COVE Programs

The students at the Max A. Shacknai Center for Outreach, Volunteerism, and Education (COVE) are constantly endeavoring to improve the campus and local communities. See what we’re up to now!

Community-Based Teams

The core of activity at the COVE is done by our student-run organizations and clubs that work in the community. Groups are student-run and receive guidance and leadership training from our professional staff.


In addition to our community-based teams, we also offer the following programs:

Alternative Breaks

A variety of trips are offered over both winter and spring breaks. These trips engage students in community service and deepen student's understanding of pertinent social issues through interaction, collaboration, and experiential learning. READ MORE

First Year Orientation - Outreach

Outreach offers incoming students an opportunity to meet new classmates while learning more about central New York by working on service projects in the region. During Outreach, students have the opportunity to work with local non-profit organizations doing important work in the Hamilton and Utica communities while meeting like-minded students.  READ MORE


Through student donations at the end of the academic year, the salvage program donates more than $30,000 worth of items to local non-profits. Organizations receive much-needed supplies to furnish transitional housing, provide warm clothing, bedding and educational materials, and stock the food pantry shelves for our neighbors. READ MORE

Service Learning

The COVE and the Upstate Institute, in partnership with the Office of the Dean of the Faculty, offer course development grants to support Colgate faculty with teaching interests that involve community engagement.  These grants include a faculty stipend as well as support for course-related expenses to develop a new or revised course that engages students in community outreach and fits the objectives outlined in the grant proposal. Common Good Network Partnership

Partnering with the Common Good Professional Network provides opportunities to promote alumni engagement, cultivate new professional opportunities for alumni and support undergraduate career development in the common good sector. READ MORE

Afternoons of Service

Each year the COVE invites students to join in the National Day of Service surrounding both 9/11 and Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Students dedicate an afternoon to volunteering with a local community partner. READ MORE

Summer Fellowship

The Levine-Weinberg Endowed Summer Fellowship provides highly qualified students interested in pursuing a career in community and/or public work with summer internship funding.  Fellows will receive funding to pursue an internship in direct volunteer service for the summer. READ MORE

Grant-Writing Course

The COVE, in collaboration with the Upstate Institute, Corporate, Foundation and Government Relations Office and Office of Career Services offer a hands-on series of workshops designed to help students and community partners understand the often-mysterious process of grant writing. READ MORE

High School Seminars

The mission of the High School Seminar Program is use Colgate’s resources to benefit the region by introducing area high school students to college-level topics that are not available at their schools and to encourage college attendance by providing them with the opportunity to experience a taste of life on a college campus. SAT Preparation Course

Each year the COVE offers a free SAT preparation course for juniors throughout Central New York. High school students work in small groups with Colgate student coaches, meeting in classrooms on the Colgate University campus. Each class will consist of practice for the reading, writing and math sections of the SAT, along with college preparation activities. The course concludes in time for the May administration of the SAT. READ MORE
