About the Training Process

Spring applications for the 2018-2019 Staff Training program are now available for members of the Class of 2021. Those interested should attend an info session on either Wednesday 3/28 or Thursday 3/29 at at Basecamp. Both sessions wil be at 4:30 p.m.

The full training experience is nine months of experiential lessons, weekly classes, and seminars that bring you together with other highly engaged and diverse first-years and sophomores. Students who complete the training program are generally hired as Outdoor Education student-staff to teach physical education classes, lead Wilderness Adventure trips, and provide team building opportunities for the Colgate community.

In addition to weekly classes, you will participate in numerous weekend trips to the Adirondacks and other destinations to strengthen technical skills, learn about risk assessment and management, promote a passion for the natural world, and to develop teaching and leadership skills. Previous outdoor experience is not required, but an eagerness to learn, a sense of adventure, and a strong desire to teach your peers are all paramount.

Wednesday, March 21

Applications will be available on this site.

Wednesday, March 28 or Thursday, March 29 at 4:30 p.m.

Anyone interested should attend one of these information sessions at Base Camp. If you cannot attend either and still want to apply for staff training, email boliver@colgate.edu.

Friday, March 30 by 10:00 a.m.

Applications are due. Applications must be submitted as a PDF to boliver@colgate.edu. Please ensure that your file name includes your name and that your name appears on page one of the application.

Monday, April 2 – 5:00–7:00 p.m.

Mandatory group interview for all applicants at the Hall of Presidents. Everyone who submits an application will get a reminder email during the day on Monday, April 2 reminding them to show up that evening.

Wednesday, April 4 and Thursday, April 5

Small group interviews will be scheduled to take place at Base Camp.

Sunday, April 8 - Wednesday, April 11

Individual interviews will be scheduled to take place at Base Camp.

Monday, April 16

Accepted applicants will be notified.

Sunday, May 12 - Thursday, May 16, 2018

Training starts with 5-days of team building training.
