Participants on this interdisciplinary program explore urban life in a well-planned and wintry city that continues to transform while also maintaining its Tsarist and Soviet-era built environments. Students partake in Russian-style wintertime outdoor cultural activities, and enroll in three English-language courses at the Northern Arctic Federal University (NArFU) in Arkhangelsk.
On the Arctic Russia study group, students spend a full semester living and learning in Arkhangelsk, Russia. The group is accompanied by a Colgate faculty director who teaches part of the students’ course load.
Arkhangelsk is an important historical city within Russia and an important city in the Arctic region today. As both Russia and the Arctic gain increasing attention in global affairs, Colgate students can grapple with multiple viewpoints about Russia and the world from international and Russian students at the host institution.
Students interested in Russian language, culture, politics, or the environment of this region should apply. All students will benefit by taking the English-language content courses while also learning a foreign language, and about the Arctic.
