Compelling instruction and field-leading research. Meet our sociology and anthropology faculty.
Join us as we comparatively study human cultures and societies, past and present. We challenge you to research and move us toward a greater understanding of the social structures and values that shape the lives, institutions, and social forces in our own and other societies.

About Sociology and Anthropology

We offer you the opportunity to pursue a degree in sociology or anthropology as a major or minor.
We examine a very wide variety of subjects, including courses on archaeology, cultural anthropology, social inequality, media and popular culture, medicine, and many others. If you're interested in learning more about almost any aspect of human culture and society, we're prepared to help advise and instruct you along the way.

While many of the students in our courses are working towards a major or a minor in the department, we also encourage students from outside the department to enroll with us for electives. The disciplines of sociology and anthropology lends itself well to the interdisciplinary culture in place at Colgate.

Majoring in our sociology (SOCI) or anthropology (ANTH) programs, however, does provide you with an outstanding foundation. After graduation from Colgate, you will have many options for careers or to pursue graduate study in fields such as communications, law, business management, public administration, teaching, journalism, or social work.

Longyear Museum of Anthropology

The Longyear Museum at Colgate is a teaching collection of archaeological and ethnographic materials from Africa, Oceania, Native North America, and the Pre-Columbian cultures of North, Central, and South America. The museum is located on the second floor of Alumni Hall (campus map), and admission is free. Learn more about the Longyear Museum of Anthropology.
