Returning-to-Campus Tech Checklist for Faculty and Staff Members

Back to ITS Updates

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many employees transitioned to work from home. Many took computer hardware home with them while leaving office printers and other equipment dormant on campus. This checklist will help employees transition back to campus during the summer of 2021 as they return with their equipment or use office technology for the first time in several months.

Re-connect your equipment

Reconnect your equipment and make sure everything — such as monitor, speakers, and microphone — is working properly. If you need any cables or connectors, contact the service desk at 315-228-7111 or itshelp@colgate.edu for assistance.

Check your network connections

If your network port(s) are not working (including your phone) you may need to have ITS visit your office space to test the port. During the past several months, roughly 550 network switches were replaced, and this may have impacted your wired ports. Contact the service desk at 315-228-7111 or itshelp@colgate.edu for assistance.

Check your desk phone

If you forwarded your number to another phone, don’t forget to turn that off. If your phone screen is completely dark, check the network port mentioned above. If it is lit up but no dial tone, you could have a stuck or failing hookswitch. A hookswitch is the button that the handset presses down when you hang up your phone. Try tapping the hookswitch to loosen. If it’s a chronic problem, contact the service desk at 315-228-7111 or itshelp@colgate.edu for a new phone.

Check your fileshare connections

If your department has not moved to Google shared drives and is still using a fileshare, check to make sure that you can still connect to your fileshares. If you are having problems, you can try rebooting your computer. Make sure your laptop is on the eduroam wireless network or plugged into a wired port — guest wireless will not work. If that does not work, contact the service desk at 315-228-7111 or itshelp@colgate.edu for assistance.

Check your printer

Send a small test print job to your printer(s). If it doesn’t work, try turning your printer off and on in order to ensure it is awake. Make sure your laptop is on the eduroam wireless network or plugged into a wired port — guest wireless will not work. If that does not work, contact the service desk at 315-228-7111 or itshelp@colgate.edu for assistance.

Check for computer updates

Make sure your laptop is on the eduroam wireless network or plugged into a wired port and check for the latest computer updates. Most of the updates should have come through without any problem while you were home, but checking for updates is always a good idea. Windows users can check Software Center to look for any pending updates.

Be aware of account lockouts

If you notice that you cannot log into your computer or use your network login for Single Sign On (SSO), you may be locked out. This is often due to a device attempting to connect to eduroam with an outdated password. Check all your devices for failed eduroam login attempts. You may need to delete or forget the eduroam network and then add it back with your updated password. Contact the service desk at 315-228-7111 or itshelp@colgate.edu for assistance.

Take inventory of your equipment

If you borrowed equipment for home use, please return those items to the service desk so they can be re-assigned or returned to stock and made ready for the next borrower. If you need an extension, please contact the service desk at 315-228-7111 or itshelp@colgate.edu to discuss.

Check the digital signs in your area

Although you may not need to turn your digital signage on until students return in the fall, checking your digital signs sooner rather than later will give you and ITS more time to address problems before the start of the semester. If the TV is turned on, but nothing displays, first check that the computer connected to the back of the TV is turned on. If it’s turned on and still presenting a black screen, check that the input is correct and also that your feed has content and your slides have not expired. If the display is still not working, contact the service desk at 315-228-7111 or itshelp@colgate.edu for assistance.
