Madison Central School Tutoring

Description: This program runs on both Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons from 3-4 pm.  They work primarily with sixth through ninth grade students on everything from homework to socializing.  At the end of the Fall semester, volunteers have a holiday party celebrating everyone's hard work.  At the end of the Spring semester, they plan a bowling party which the students really look forward to.  Volunteers also plan other events, and bring snacks for the kids on minor holidays like Valentine's Day and Halloween.

MCS Tutoring is a small group of tutors, often working consistently with the same kids week to week, so they are able to build close relationships and see the kids grow over time.  It's a great feeling to walk into the classroom and have them call "dibs" on you as a tutor.  For those who might be afraid to tutor a kid or fear you aren't smart enough - don't worry!  You definitely can help in all areas.  It's also a good way to get refresher courses in all basic subjects!

The time commitment is roughly one hour, twice a week. The group provides its own transportation to Madison Central School.

Community: MCS Tutoring partners with children grades six through nine at Madison Central School.

Volunteers Say: "It has given me a core group of friends I look forward to seeing every week.  An opportunity to get out of Hamilton and see the surrounding area as well as get a sense of the people that live around us.  We all appreciate the joy the kids show when we come to tutor, and the gratitude their teacher shows us.  I appreciate Colgate and what it provides me much more."
