Chenango Nursery School
The Chenango Nursery School is a place for small children before entering pre-school. The School is a great resource for working parents who can put their child in daycare during the day. Volunteers work at the Chenango Nursery School in its organization, logistics, and maintenance, but also have contact with the children. This group is one of the COVE's newest and fastest-growing.
Green Earth Gang
The Green Earth Gang (GEG) mission is to promote environmental awareness among children ages 8 – 10 in local schools through experiential and interactive activities. Once every two weeks the GEG student members teach a 40-minute class about an environment-related topic. The GEG works with elementary students and their teachers in hopes that the students will apply what they learn to their daily lives. The leaders of GEG and any other interested members collaborate on the bi-monthly lesson plans.
Hamilton Elementary and Secondary Tutoring
Colgate students provide one hour of tutoring a week to K-12th grade children. The student tutors provide instruction on an individualized and/or small group basis working in coordination with teaching.
Headstart
Headstart is a national, federally-funded program that supports the positive growth of low-income children. Our group's work is geared toward positive role modeling and teacher support. Volunteers travel to nearby Waterville for one hour once a week and participate in activities like playtime, reading and general help within the classrooms. This group has merged with the Stockbridge Valley Pre-K program, but not with Stockbridge Valley Tutoring in general.
Let's Get Ready
Let's Get Ready helps local high school students prepare for the SAT, as well as assist them with college choices, the application process, and financial aid. Colgate students may volunteer to coach either verbal/writing or math for a 3-hour session each week throughout the Spring semester.
Madison Central School Tutoring
This tutoring program works with junior high and senior high school students at Madison Central School, helping with homework and providing mentorship. Tutoring occurs after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
North Broad Street Tutoring
Colgate students both mentor and tutor kindergarten through 6th grade students at North Broad Street Elementary School in Oneida, a relatively low-income area of New York State. Students will have the opportunity to tutor in the grade level of their choice either in the classroom or as part of an afterschool program. The main goal of this group is to create a stable relationship between elementary school and college students, who encourage the children academically as well as socially.
Literacy for Refugees
The mission of the group is to provide general learning assistance to teenage refugees studying at Proctor High School, in Utica, N.Y. Many refugees rank at the bottom of the socioeconomic spectrum and are marginalized by the society. In the educational environment, refugees are put into age appropriate classes without knowing any English. Literacy for Refugees aims to alleviate this inequity by tutoring refugees in English, for three hours a week, on a designated afternoon. The commitment is small, but the effect is big.
Stockbridge Valley Tutoring Program
The Stockbridge Tutoring program offers help to students of late middle school and high school age, mainly in mathematics (i.e., early algebra, geometry, etc.). Tutoring sessions occur Tuesday - Thursday from 2:10 to 3:35 pm.
