Team Players

Description: Sprung out of the Male Involvement Initiative, Team Players is a mentoring group for fourth grade boys at Madison Central School.  Every Tuesday afternoon, Colgate males teach the basic skills of a sport and play team building games with the boys.  The group also teaches the boys respect for the referees and their teammates, how to stretch and prepare themselves for practice, and competition-based exercise such as relays.  Current hot topics include basketball, soccer and rugby.

Team Players demonstrates that men don't have to give up their hobbies to do service work, and that having fun while mentoring youth is beneficial for both sides of the relationship. Transportation is provided by carpool, and commuting time is used for brief preparation as well as reflection on the day's events.

Community: Team Players organizes activities for fourth grade boys at Madison Central School, which is located about ten minutes away in Madison.

Volunteers Say: "Working with the guys is pretty great.  The kids are so eager to play sports with us 'grown-ups' and I think they are learning a lot of things they wouldn't normally have the opportunity to learn.  They continue to become more and more excited about seeing us walk into the library every week, which is a great feeling... and it cuts out a day of gym time!"
