Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA)

Description: The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program at Colgate provides income tax preparation services for low-income households in Madison and Chenango counties. It trains approximately 35 student volunteers each year, who travel to five different sites in the area to file income taxes. In 2007, it helped 1,100 families and returned over $1 million to the local community.

Anyone with an interest in helping families with tax preparation may join.  Although knowing how to file tax returns for yourself is useful, the process of tax preparation can be learned and assisting those in need is of great help to the local community.  Many believe it is too convoluted of a process to file income tax returns - VITA volunteers can help change that belief!

Community: VITA volunteers go all over Central New York, interacting with a variety of people from Madison and Chenango counties.
