Oxfam America

Description: One of the most recent COVE groups, Oxfam America is an international relief and development organization dedicated to fighting hunger, poverty, and injustice around the world.

The campus organization will specifically work on three campaigns: the Hunger and Poverty campaign, the Extractive Industries campaign, and the Climate Change campaign.  Volunteers at Colgate will work to raise awareness, host events and fundraise.  You can see a video of what Oxfam is about at Colgate here.

So far the group has screened a number of movies highlighting the destructive nature of mining industries, held a ONE campaign for Hunger and Poverty, petitioned to Congress to support the Extractive Industries Transparency Disclosure Act - stipulating that all oil, gas, and mining companies report publicly where their money is going and how - and co-sponsored (along with CHOP) Hunger and Homelessness Week.  That week, held in November of 2008, involved hosting Colgate's first Hunger Banquet, disseminating shocking statistics about poverty and hunger in Madison County, and sponsoring a number of panels highlighting those same issues globally and locally.  See Colgate's newspaper's response to Hunger and Homelessness Week on the Maroon-News website.

Community: Oxfam partners with Oxfam America, an international organization.

Volunteers Say: "I think that, importantly, Oxfam not only focuses on this area, which helps people understand what's going on around here, but also ties that in to the global community and how everyone is intertwined, how everything we do affects everyone else.  I take great pride in being a representative of Oxfam on this campus and in this area."
