New e-mail addresses
On December 19th, student e-mail addresses will change from @students.colgate.edu to @colgate.edu. Your username will remain the same, but your password will be different and given to you through the portal. All new e-mail will go into your @colgate.edu e-mail box.
You will still have access to @students.colgate.edu (along with your @colgate.edu e-mail box) for 12 months after you graduate. However all old messages, documents and websites will not be copied over to your new e-mail box. If you want this material to be moved, you will have to do this yourself.
File sharing changes
Once you have the new e-mail address, your documents and website will have to be re-shared using your new e-mail address. It also means that items shared with “colgate.edu “ provides access to everyone at Colgate.
Here is how to check and change your file sharing rights per document:
1. Login into your old e-mail box and go into Google docs.
2. Click on the word “sharing” next to the document name. The list of people with whom you have shared the document will appear.
3. Be sure to re-share the document using the correct e-mail address for each person.

Sending to the correct e-mail address
To stop those pesky (and now incorrect) e-mail addresses from popping up in your Google mail drop-down box, go to your contacts on the top left of your Google e-mail.

Select and delete the old contact.

A community of learning and technology
Colgate University’s computing environment is a community effort and the value of these systems depends on how they are used. Information technology is transforming most academic fields of study at Colgate and forms an important part of the campus culture and community. The Student Technology Resource Center (SOURCe) takes great pride in providing reliable high-speed networking and friendly help desk services to help ensure your academic success and enrich your Colgate experience.
SOURCe also believes that the teaching and learning of technology takes place outside the requirements of coursework, with students learning actively from each other. To foster this learning community and spirit of independent inquiry, Colgate University supports a diverse and comparatively open computing environment. As is so often the case, with this freedom comes increased responsibility.
Safety, security, and responsibility
Internet security and Internet crime are important issues at Colgate University, as elsewhere. Unfortunately, some students forget that basic values and common sense also apply to cyberspace.
For example, some students, who would never dream of shoplifting, steal hundreds of dollars worth of copyrighted online materials and then seem surprised when faced with criminal charges.
Others, who would never leave their car unlocked with the keys in the ignition, casually forget to log out of workstations on the network. Unfortunately, the thoughtless or malicious actions of a few can affect the whole university’s computing environment and many of those who use it.
