Network Printing @ Colgate

Colgate University provides access to network printers for faculty and staff accounts. These printers can be found in labs and offices, and are generally high volume black and white printers. The printers accessible by Faculty and Staff will often have the printer queue name displayed on the printer. The name and path follow the following format:

\\server_name\printer_name

Before you can connect to a printer in your area, you will have to know the full path to the printer, as shown above. In some cases, the full path is needed, while in others only the printer name is required to connect.

Issues may be reported by calling x7111 or by using the online form.

Windows XP

Adding a network printer in Windows XP is a straightforward process, providing you know the printer information. Please note that the Devices and Printers page can also be found in the Control Panel.
1. Click on the Start menu, and click on Printers and Faxes
2. Click Add a printer to start the Add Printer Wizard. Click Next
3. Select A network printer..., and click Next
4. Select Connect to this printer..., and enter the Name in the following format: \\server_name\printer_name.
5. Click Next
6. Click Next or select the default printer
7. Review the printer information, and click Finish
Alternative method
Alternative method of adding the printer quickly in Windows XP, is to enter the full path to the printer in the Run prompt:
1. Press the Windows Key, or click on Start
2. Click on Run
3. Type the printer path, such as \\server_name\printer_name, and press Enter. Your printer should be listed under devices now.

1. Click the Apple menu, and click System Preferences
2. Click Print & Fax
3. Click the plus button (+) in the lower left. If the button is grayed out, click the lock below it to authenticate
4. Click the IP button on top of the add printer page, and provide the following information:
  - Protocol: Line Printer Daemon - LPD
    Address: Enter printer server
    Queue: Enter the name of the printer
    Name: Printer name as you want it to appear on the list
    Location: Printer location, not mandatory
    Print Using: Auto Select (it'll automatically change to Generic), or select a specific driver from the list
5. Click Add when it becomes available.
Windows 7

Adding a network printer in Windows 7 is a straightforward process, providing you know the printer information. Please note that the Devices and Printers page can also be found in the Control Panel.
1. Click on the Start menu, search for Devices and Printers and click it.
2. Click Add a printer to start the Add Printer Wizard. Click Next
3. Select A network printer..., and click Next
4. Select The printer that I want isn't listed, and click Next
5. Select Select a shared printer by name and enter the printer name in the following format: \\server_name\printer_name.
6. Click Next, and wait for the connection to be established
7. Click Install Driver when asked Do you trust this printer?
8. Click Next once the driver is installed
9. Click Finish to close the wizard
10. Review and test your printer
Alternative method
